Jeanne's Story

Date: December 2024
Location: Chinchilla
University: University of Southern Queensland
Field of Study: Bachelor of Nursing

What did you enjoy most about your rural placement?

I learned a lot of new things at the Chinchilla hospital that I would not have known about if I had done my placement in a metropolitan hospital.

I also:

  • Made new friends
  • Loved the convenience of only needing to drive short distances to necessities
  • Had great supervisors

Would you recommend a rural placement to other students? Why?

Yes, as it would allow them to see the difference between working in rural and metropolitan environments.

What are your top tips for students considering a rural placement?

  • Have transport ready
  • Enjoy all the SQRH activities
  • Make new friends
  • Enjoy your time!

Did you stay in SQRH accommodation or have interactions with SQRH staff?

Yes. I loved it as it allowed me to make new friends and have a home that felt cozy. The SQRH staff are all friendly and have great knowledge in their respective fields so you can learn a lot from them!

From Toowoomba to Charleville, Kingaroy to Goondiwindi, our students’ complete rural placements all over regional, rural, and remote Southern Queensland (across more than 400,000 square kilometres).

Learn first-hand from students, just like yourself, about their experience going on a rural placement, and why it’s an experience like no other!
